Notes:

Early hurling finals proved to be difficult events to arrange and deliver for a number of reasons.

  • The 1888 Championship was unfinished owing to a tour of the United States by hurlers, footballers and athletes
  • In 1890, Cork withdrew from the field in protest at rough play by the Wexford team. Cork were awarded the title
  • In 1892, Dublin withdrew from the field with ten minutes remaining. after Cork were awarded a disputed goal. Cork were awarded the title
  • The 1899 final was left unfinished with Tipperary being awarded the title
  • In 1905,  a “re-fixture” of the All-Ireland Final was needed following an objection by Kilkenny (who had just lost the first game by a score of 5-10 to 3-12) and a counter-objection by Cork.  The GAA decided on a re-match and Kilkenny went on to win this second game by a score of 7-7 to 2-9.
  • The 1911 All-Ireland SH Final also ended in controversy, when Limerick refused to play in Thurles after the original fixture on 18 February 1912 in Cork was postponed – owing to the state of pitch. Kilkenny were awarded the All-Ireland title.
